Thailand: Stop issuing permits for waste classification and recycling operations

At the "2025 Net Zero Emissions Road: Thailand's Green Action" forum held on June 19, 2025, Thai Minister of Industry Akanat announced plans to promote sustainable development and innovation in Thailand's industry. He emphasized the importance of rapidly transitioning to a green circular economy and pointed out that the Thai government has taken a series of measures to support this transformation.

Thailand's goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. The Thai government plans to upgrade all factories nationwide to green industries by 2025. This plan is part of Thailand's BCG (Biological, Circular, Green) economic policy aimed at promoting sustainable development of the Thai economy. In addition, Thailand plans to implement the Global Warming Act in 2025 and begin levying carbon taxes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Thailand will become the second ASEAN country after Singapore to implement a carbon tax.
Thailand plans to recycle 100% of plastic waste by 2027 and ban the import of plastic waste from January 1, 2025.

He announced that the department will no longer issue new permits for waste classification and recycling operations, but will shift its focus to ensuring compliance with existing permits. In terms of green finance and investment, Akanat actively advocates the establishment of an "Industrial Sustainable Development Fund" to assist enterprises in achieving green technology transformation. He also held talks with major banks to ensure sufficient financial support for the enterprise.
